Local health authority investigating suicide of the 22-year-old:
"Not everything is clear. We will bring the facts to light"

GALATINA - The ASL local health authority has opened a commission of inquiry to assess potential responsibility for the suicide of a 21-year-old Naples man, Luca Izzo (he would have turned 22 in October) who, late on Tuesday late afternoon, took his own life by jumping from the fourth floor of a fire escape outside Santa Caterina Novella Hospital in Galatina. The young man's body has already been delivered back to Naples and, at noon yesterday morning, the body was cremated.

"We've received the reports from the hospital managers," says Valdo Mellone, director general of the Lecce ASL, "but not everything is clear. The circumstances that have been reported do not warrant any immediate disciplinary action, but to dispel any doubt, we've decided to establish a commission of inquiry presided by the medical director, Ottavio Narracci. Dr. Alberto Tortorella and two or three other persons will certainly also be part of the commission. I'm presently taking this into consideration."

The first chapter has now begun, and it could not be otherwise, because there is a family that has the right to know how and why a young man who wanted to better his future returned home in a coffin.

The ASL would have preferred that an autopsy be performed, but since the young man had not been formally admitted to hospital, permission had to be requested from the public prosecutor's office. The answer was no, because the body had already been released and, as mentioned earlier, cremated. The evidence that an autopsy would have provided will therefore not be available.

Many questions have been left dangling, questions that cannot be answered. The young man's leap has left a trail of pain and dismay, along with a host of questions. The ASL is investigating, but it is possible that the prosecutor's office might also open an investigation because the family is very upset over this death.

On Wednesday morning, the Galatina police commissariat sent prosecutor Giuseppe Capoccia a detailed report which provides facts, witness testimony, and observations collected at the scene where the young man took his own life. For Luca Izzo, it was all over in a matter of hours. He had decided to go to rehab and, with his family, had chosen Narconon "Il Gabbiano" at Torre dell'Orso, a rehabilitation center where former addicts, once they have emerged from the tunnel of drug dependence, help other young people chase away the "monkey," as drug addiction is called in their jargon. The center is private and a monthly fee has to be paid for access. On average, the detoxification period requires a stay of at least three months.

Narconon employees went to Naples on Tuesday morning to meet Luca Izzo and take him to the center. He had just arrived when, around noon, he began to show signs of strong agitation caused by severe withdrawal symptoms. When he began banging his head against a wall at the center, Narconon decided to take him to the emergency room. According to statements released by the Narconon legal affairs officer, Alessandro Troso, there was no time to ask the doctor who checks the health of Narconon's guests every morning for a consultation.

Three Narconon employees took the young man to the emergency room at Vito Fazzi Hospital, where he was kept under observation for three hours, sedated, and underwent a psychiatric examination. In the meantime, the medication abated the effects of his drug withdrawal, and he signed a voluntary discharge form. Then, after a suicide attempt with a pair of scissors, the psychiatrist recommended voluntary admission. Vito Fazzi Hospital had no available bed and no ambulance to transfer him to Galatina. He arrived in at Santa Caterina Hospital in Galatina with the Narconon employees, but while waiting for the formal admission procedure, he escaped and leaped to his death.
